Amman in context

Amman sits on a hilly plateau in north-central Jordan at an elevation between 700 and 1,100 metres, the capital and largest Jordanian city with around 4 million residents in the metropolitan area, roughly 40 percent of the country's total population. The city extends across seven major hills, the original geography of which gives Amman its nickname of 'the city of seven jabals'. The Roman amphitheatre at the downtown core dates from the 2nd century AD.

Timezone history of Amman

Jordan moved permanently to UTC+3 in October 2022, abolishing its previous practice of switching between EET and EEST. The country now sits year-round on the same offset as Moscow, Saudi Arabia, and East Africa, aligning more naturally with its Gulf trading partners than with the European DST schedule. The shift was officially justified by economic and energy considerations following several years of debate.

Working hours in Amman

Amman's working week runs Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend. Government offices typically open at 08:00 and close at 15:30, while private sector hours run later, often 09:00 to 17:30 or 18:00. The substantial international NGO presence in Amman (the city hosts regional offices for many UN agencies focused on the Levant) operates to internationally coordinated working calendars. Public holidays combine Islamic festivals with national observances including Independence Day on 25 May.
