What's the timezone history of Brasília?
Brasília gives its name to the country's principal offset: Brasília Time at UTC-3 is the reference against which Brazil's other zones are set, even though the capital lies well inland. The city shares the offset with the populous south-east, including São Paulo and Rio, and with the whole of the eastern seaboard. Brazil abolished daylight saving nationwide in 2019, so the capital, like the rest of the country, now holds a single fixed offset throughout the year.
What are the working hours in Brasília?
The working day is dominated by the machinery of federal government, the ministries, the congress, the courts, and the diplomatic corps, lending the city an administrative rhythm distinct from Brazil's commercial centres, with offices generally running 08:00 to 18:00 and a long midday break. The political calendar, with its legislative sessions and recesses, shapes the year as much as the public holidays. Activity quietens over the southern summer around Christmas and the New Year, and again during Carnival in February or March.
Where is Brasília?
Brasília stands on the high central plateau of Brazil, a planned capital carved out of empty savannah and inaugurated in 1960 to draw development inland from the crowded coast. Laid out by Lúcio Costa in the shape of an aeroplane or a bird, with Oscar Niemeyer's monumental white buildings along its central axis, the planned core sits within a federal district whose wider population is around 3 million. It lies roughly a thousand kilometres from both São Paulo and the Atlantic shore.
