What's the timezone history of Coimbatore?
Before the all-India standard, much of the south kept Madras Time, fixed at the observatory in Madras, now Chennai, and adopted by the region's railways in the nineteenth century as one of British India's earliest standard times. Coimbatore, then within the Madras Presidency, ran on that clock. The single Indian offset replaced it after independence; at around 77 degrees east the city now sits close to the IST meridian, so its civil and solar noons fall only a few minutes apart.
What are the working hours in Coimbatore?
Cotton spinning, textile machinery, and the manufacture of motors and pumps built the local economy, and the surrounding district remains a dense cluster of engineering workshops and foundries run by a notably entrepreneurial business community. Factory and office hours commonly run 09:00 to 18:00. The Tamil harvest festival of Pongal in mid-January is the year's principal closure, when the industrial belt quietens as workers return to their villages, and Diwali and the Tamil New Year in April are the other significant breaks. The mills also pause for the Ayudha Puja that falls within the Navaratri season.
Where is Coimbatore?
Coimbatore lies in western Tamil Nadu on the banks of the Noyyal River, set against the Western Ghats near the Palakkad Gap, the broad break in the mountains that funnels wind toward the city and links it to neighbouring Kerala. The metropolitan area holds around 2.5 million people. It is the second-largest city in the state after Chennai, sitting inland on a dry plain that became one of southern India's earliest industrial centres.
