Copenhagen in context

Copenhagen sits on the eastern coast of Zealand and northern Amager islands in eastern Denmark, facing Sweden across the narrow ร˜resund strait. The municipal population is around 660,000, with the wider Copenhagen-Malmรถ ร˜resund region (which functions as a single labour market across two countries) at around 4 million. The geography is exceptionally flat, with the highest point in the city barely rising above 31 metres.

Timezone history of Copenhagen

Copenhagen uses Central European Time, the same as the rest of Denmark, Sweden, and Germany. The ร˜resund Bridge connecting Copenhagen to Malmรถ in Sweden, opened in 2000, allows tens of thousands of daily cross-border commuters with no timezone change. The Danish exclave of Greenland uses different timezones (mostly Atlantic Time), but the bulk of Danish operational activity occurs on CET.

Working hours in Copenhagen

Copenhagen's working day runs 08:00 to 16:00, notably shorter than most European norms, with Danish working culture emphasising compact intense work followed by family time and an early dinner. The substantial cycling culture (more than 60 percent of central Copenhagen commutes are by bike) shapes commute timing more sharply than in driving-dominated cities. National holidays include the Constitution Day on 5 June, Great Prayer Day in spring (recently abolished in 2024 in a politically controversial move), and the conventional Christian holidays.
