Guam in context
Guam is an island in the western Pacific, the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands and an unincorporated territory of the United States. Around 170,000 residents live across an area of approximately 540 square kilometres, with the capital Hagåtña on the western coast and the largest population concentrated around Dededo in the north. Andersen Air Force Base and Naval Base Guam together occupy roughly a third of the island.
Timezone history of Guam
Guam observes Chamorro Standard Time at UTC+10, the same offset as eastern Australia in standard time. The territory does not use daylight saving. Despite being US territory, Guam's offset places it on the far side of the international date line from Honolulu: when it is Monday morning in Guam, it is still Sunday afternoon in Honolulu, despite both being US jurisdictions.
Working hours in Guam
Guam's working week is shaped by the US military presence, with civilian contractors and personnel working hours aligned to Washington and Pacific Command schedules. The civilian economy of tourism, especially Japanese and Korean visitor traffic, organises around regional Asian holiday calendars: Japanese Golden Week in late April and early May, and Korean Chuseok in autumn, produce visible peaks. US federal holidays apply alongside local observances including Liberation Day on 21 July, marking the end of Japanese occupation in 1944.
