Las Vegas in context
Las Vegas sits in the Mojave Desert in southern Nevada, around 430 kilometres east-northeast of Los Angeles. The city proper holds around 660,000 residents, with the wider Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise metropolitan area at 2.3 million. The famous Strip of casino-resort towers actually lies in the unincorporated community of Paradise rather than within the city limits, but is universally referred to as part of Las Vegas.
Timezone history of Las Vegas
Las Vegas uses Pacific Time, the same offset as Los Angeles, despite sitting in Nevada immediately adjacent to Mountain Time states. The Arizona state line, around 130 kilometres east, marks the change to Mountain Standard Time year-round (Arizona does not observe DST). For half the year, therefore, Las Vegas and Phoenix sit on the same wall-clock time despite belonging to different timezones.
Working hours in Las Vegas
Las Vegas's working day is largely defined by the round-the-clock operations of the casino-resort industry, which employs roughly a third of the metropolitan workforce and runs continuous shifts. Conventional office hours of 09:00 to 17:00 apply in finance, government, and the convention-services sector. The city's three major convention venues collectively draw around 6 million attendees each year, producing distinct surge weeks where hospitality staffing peaks well above its baseline.
