What's the timezone history of Macau?

Macau keeps the same UTC+8 offset as neighbouring Hong Kong and the mainland, with no seasonal change. Under Portuguese administration the territory observed summer time on and off through much of the twentieth century, last applying it in 1979 before settling on a fixed year-round clock. As a special administrative region it sets its own civil arrangements, but alignment with the surrounding delta keeps cross-boundary business and the frequent ferry timetables to Hong Kong straightforward to plan.

What are the working hours in Macau?

The economy is dominated to an unusual degree by casino gaming and the tourism around it, an industry several times larger by revenue than that of Las Vegas and one that runs around the clock, making shift work the norm for much of the workforce. Conventional offices and the public administration keep roughly 09:00 to 18:00 hours. Both Chinese and Catholic-influenced Portuguese holidays sit on the calendar, so closures cluster around the Lunar New Year and again at Christmas and feast days unusual elsewhere in the region.

Where is Macau?

Macau occupies a small peninsula and two former islands on the western side of the Pearl River estuary, around 60 kilometres south-west of Hong Kong across the mouth of the river. Fewer than 700,000 people live within roughly 33 square kilometres, making it one of the most densely populated territories on earth. A Portuguese settlement from the sixteenth century and the oldest European outpost in East Asia, it returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1999 and is governed as a special administrative region.
