What's the timezone history of Manaus?
Manaus keeps Amazon Time at UTC-4, an hour behind the Brasรญlia Time of Sรฃo Paulo and the populous south-east, so a domestic flight from Rio or the capital crosses an internal time boundary and the clock goes back an hour on arrival. The offset covers the western Amazon states. Like the rest of the country, the region abandoned daylight saving altogether in 2019, having in any case rarely applied it this close to the equator, where the length of the day barely changes.
What are the working hours in Manaus?
The Manaus Free Trade Zone, a duty-free industrial pole established in the 1960s, anchors the formal economy, with electronics and motorcycle assembly plants employing much of the city alongside river trade and a growing eco-tourism sector. Offices generally run a Brazilian working day of around 08:00 to 18:00 with a long lunch. The river sets much of the rhythm of supply and travel, with the wet and dry seasons raising and dropping the water level by many metres. National holidays and the June festivals punctuate the calendar.
Where is Manaus?
Manaus rises in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, on the north bank of the Rio Negro just above its meeting with the Solimรตes, where the two rivers' dark and pale waters run side by side for kilometres before mixing into the Amazon proper. The metropolitan area holds around 2.5 million people, a major city reachable from the rest of Brazil largely by boat or by plane. It grew rich during the rubber boom and was revived in the twentieth century as a duty-free industrial zone.
