What's the timezone history of Monterrey?
Monterrey keeps Central Standard Time at UTC-6 and, since Mexico abolished daylight saving across most of the country in 2022, no longer changes its clocks. Although the city lies in the north, close to a United States that does still observe daylight saving, only the narrow strip of municipalities directly on the border was exempted from the reform to keep step with American neighbours; Monterrey, a little further south, was not, so it now sits a fixed hour apart from Texas through the US summer.
What are the working hours in Monterrey?
The working culture is among the most formal and industrious in Mexico, shaped by the large manufacturing conglomerates and business schools for which the city is known, with office hours often running 09:00 to 18:00 or later and a shorter lunch than the national norm. The close commercial integration with the United States keys much of the calendar to cross-border trade. The main closures fall around Christmas and Holy Week, alongside the Mexican national holidays including Independence Day in September.
Where is Monterrey?
Monterrey lies in the north-east of Mexico, ringed by the dramatic peaks of the Sierra Madre Oriental, around 200 kilometres south of the Texas border. The metropolitan area holds around 5.3 million people, making it the country's second or third largest depending on the measure, and its wealthiest major city. Long the industrial powerhouse of Mexico, built on steel, cement, glass, and brewing, it retains a reputation for a hard-working, business-minded culture distinct from the capital.
