Munich in context
Munich sits on the Isar River in Bavaria in southern Germany, at the foot of the Alps which rise to the south. The capital of Bavaria and the third-largest city in Germany with around 1.5 million residents, the wider metropolitan region extends to around 6 million across the surrounding state. The geography places it at around 520 metres elevation, noticeably higher than most German cities, with a distinctive climate of cold winters and warm summers.
Timezone history of Munich
Munich shares Central European Time with the rest of Germany, but the city's position toward the southern edge of the country puts it slightly closer to the actual CET solar meridian than Hamburg or Berlin. The Austrian and Swiss borders, both around 100 kilometres away to the south, share CET. Bavaria's political distinctiveness within Germany has not produced any timezone divergence, but it does account for the unusual public holiday calendar that includes additional Catholic observances.
Working hours in Munich
Munich's working day runs 08:30 to 17:30, with the substantial industrial sector (BMW, Siemens, MAN, Allianz) anchoring the city's white-collar economy. Bavaria observes more public holidays than other German states, including Epiphany on 6 January, Corpus Christi in May or June, Assumption on 15 August, and All Saints' Day on 1 November. Oktoberfest, running over two and a half weeks from late September into the first weekend of October, produces visible disruption around the city centre.
