Nice in context
Nice sits on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France in the Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d'Azur region, the fifth-largest French city with around 350,000 residents in the municipality and a wider metropolitan area of around 1 million. The geography is defined by the curve of the Baie des Anges, the Old Town pressed against the foot of Castle Hill, and the dramatic Alpine foothills rising directly behind the coast within a few kilometres of the sea.
Timezone history of Nice
Nice shares Central European Time and the EU's DST schedule with the rest of France. The city's position toward the southeastern corner of France places it close to the Italian border (around 30 kilometres east), where the timezone does not change since Italy also uses CET. The famous Promenade des Anglais runs east-west along the seafront, with the entire Cรดte d'Azur sharing the same offset from Saint-Tropez west to the Italian frontier.
Working hours in Nice
Nice's working day runs to French national norms of 09:00 to 18:00 with a long midday break, similar to Lyon and Paris but with a stronger tourism-industry overlay. The city's substantial cruise port and the Nice Cรดte d'Azur Airport (the third-busiest in France) produce significant year-round visitor traffic. The Nice Carnival in February and the nearby Cannes Film Festival in May produce concentrated business activity. The Riviera business community operates with a more relaxed lunch culture than Paris, with two-hour midday breaks remaining common.
