Phuket in context
Phuket is an island province of southern Thailand off the western coast of the Malay Peninsula in the Andaman Sea. The island holds around 420,000 residents across roughly 540 square kilometres, with the principal town of Phuket City on the eastern coast and the major tourist resorts spread along the western beaches from Patong south to Karon and Kata. A bridge across the narrow Sarasin Channel connects the island to the mainland.
Timezone history of Phuket
Phuket shares Indochina Time at UTC+7 with the rest of Thailand, the same offset as Bangkok 850 kilometres to the north. The island's position toward the southwestern corner of Thailand places it closer to the central meridian for UTC+7 than Bangkok, with solar noon arriving close to clock noon during standard time. The Malaysian border around 250 kilometres south marks the change to UTC+8.
Working hours in Phuket
Phuket's working economy is overwhelmingly dominated by tourism, with around 14 million annual visitors in pre-pandemic years and a workforce heavily concentrated in hospitality, transportation, and beach services running daylight-to-evening cycles. The peak tourist season from November through March pulls maximum staffing, while the southwest monsoon from May through October reduces beach activity and dive operations. Conventional office hours (08:30 to 17:30) apply in the smaller commercial and government sector based in Phuket City.
