Portland in context
Portland sits at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers in northwestern Oregon, around 170 kilometres south of Seattle. The city proper holds around 635,000 residents, with the wider Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metropolitan area (extending across the river into Washington state) at around 2.5 million. The municipal area is unusually green, with a substantial portion of the inner city given over to parks, including the large Forest Park along the western hills.
Timezone history of Portland
Portland uses Pacific Time alongside the rest of Oregon and observes federal DST. The state line with Washington across the Columbia River does not produce a timezone change, but commuters do cross between two states with distinctly different tax regimes (Oregon has no sales tax, Washington has no income tax), producing significant cross-river commercial activity. The eastern part of Oregon, beyond the Cascades, switches to Mountain Time at the Snake River boundary.
Working hours in Portland
Portland's working day runs 08:30 to 17:30 across most sectors, with the city's noted concentration of creative-industry firms, breweries, and outdoor-gear companies producing a flexible-hours culture that often extends into the early evening. The major employers Nike (in nearby Beaverton) and Intel (in Hillsboro) anchor a substantial commuter workforce on the western side of the metropolitan area. Oregon's lack of sales tax routinely pulls Washington residents across the river for major purchases.
