Punta del Este in context
Punta del Este sits on a small peninsula on the Atlantic coast of southeastern Uruguay, where the RÃo de la Plata estuary meets the open ocean around 130 kilometres east of Montevideo. The permanent population is around 9,000, but the resort balloons to several hundred thousand visitors during the summer season from December through February, when much of the South American economic elite decamps to its second homes along the coast.
Timezone history of Punta del Este
Punta del Este uses Uruguay Time at UTC-3 year-round. Uruguay does not observe daylight saving, having abolished the practice in 2015 after years of seasonal use that was repeatedly criticised for limited energy savings. The fixed offset places Uruguay an hour ahead of nearby Buenos Aires (in winter and summer alike) and a half-hour behind the Falkland Islands further south. The country's compact north-south geography keeps the entire territory on a single timezone.
Working hours in Punta del Este
Punta del Este's commercial year is dominated by the Southern Hemisphere summer high season: hotels, restaurants, casinos, and beach services run at maximum capacity from late December through Carnaval in February, then largely shut down for the off-season. The conventional 09:00 to 18:00 office hours apply year-round to the smaller permanent commercial sector. The annual Punta del Este Film Festival in early March and the polo season are the main social calendar anchors after the summer peak.
