Timezone facts
Stockholm in context
Stockholm sits on 14 islands at the mouth of Lake Mรคlaren where it meets the Baltic Sea, on the east coast of central Sweden. The municipal population is around 980,000, with the wider Stockholm County area at around 2.4 million, accounting for roughly a quarter of Sweden's total population. The city's archipelago of around 30,000 surrounding islands extends 60 kilometres eastward into the Baltic, producing one of the most distinctive urban geographies in northern Europe.
Timezone history of Stockholm
Stockholm uses Central European Time, the same offset as Berlin and Paris, despite Sweden's relatively eastern position (the city sits at around 18 degrees east, comparable to Vienna). Sweden's high latitude (59.3 degrees north) produces extreme seasonal variation in day length: late December sunsets arrive before 14:50, while summer twilight stretches past 22:30 at the solstice, and the far north of the country experiences continuous midnight sun in June.
Working hours in Stockholm
Stockholm's working day runs 08:30 to 17:00, with a short lunch break and an emphasis on completing the day to free up early evenings. Swedish working culture is among the most reform-oriented in Europe, with widespread adoption of parental leave, flexible hours, and four-day-week experiments through the 2010s and 2020s. The summer holiday period in July effectively closes much of the country, with most offices operating at reduced capacity for three to four weeks.
