What's the timezone history of Surat?
Surat was the premier port of Mughal India and the site of the English East India Company's first Indian factory, established in 1612, when the harbour ran on local solar time set by the sun rather than any national standard. That standard arrived only with the railways centuries later. Today the half-hour Indian offset, 30 minutes off the round-hour zones, adds a recurring piece of mental arithmetic to the city's intensely international diamond and textile trade with Antwerp, Dubai, and Hong Kong.
What are the working hours in Surat?
Surat cuts and polishes the large majority of the world's diamonds and weaves a vast share of India's synthetic textiles, two trades built on family firms and long, hard hours rather than the fixed office day. Workshops in the diamond bourse and the powerloom districts often run extended or double shifts, with the Gujarati merchant culture prizing diligence and quick dealing. Diwali brings an extended shutdown when the diamond units close together and migrant workers travel home, and Navratri in the autumn is the other major break.
Where is Surat?
Surat stands on the Tapi River near the Gulf of Khambhat in southern Gujarat, around 280 kilometres north of Mumbai. The metropolitan area holds more than 6 million people and has been among the fastest-growing cities in the world, swollen by the migrant labour drawn to its workshops. It lies on the industrial corridor running up the western coast, close enough to Mumbai to fall within its commercial orbit while keeping a distinct identity and a long history of its own.
