Yerevan sits on a high plateau in the southern Caucasus, the capital of Armenia, with the snow-capped cone of Mount Ararat, just across the closed border in Turkey, dominating the southern horizon. The metropolitan area holds around 1.3 million people, more than a third of the country's population. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, founded as a fortress in 782 BC, it was rebuilt in the twentieth century in the pink volcanic tufa stone that gives it a distinctive warm colour.
